Character Name: James Watson
Series: Sanctuary
Timeline: 3x17 Normandy (after John orders Korba to arrange for his transfer to Berlin)
Canon Resource Link: [His Wikia page] [Normandy Episode]
Character History: Born during the age of Victoria in England, James attended Oxford University when he was old enough, studying to be a doctor. It was there that he met the friends that would help define him for much longer than a life time, calling themselves the Five, James, Helen Magnus, Nigel Griffin, Nikola Tesla and John Druitt would each touch history in their own ways as time went on. However during that time in the 1880's, they also dealt with a man named Adam Worth seeking to join them in their experiments with ancient vampire blood, the Source Blood. When he was turned away by Helen, James merely nodded and went back to work, and that work would turn them all into the figures they would be known as by history with a serum derived from the Source Blood. James became Sherlock Holmes, Nikola Tesla a vampire, Helen gifted with long life, Nigel the Invisible Man and Druitt the killer known as Jack the Ripper and it was the last one whose actions would divide the group and leave a bitter taste in James's mouth for a century to come.
After Druitt's rampage throughout London, James worked alongside Helen at her father's Sanctuary, being both friend and confidant in that time. It was during this time that a curious event happened. While Helen for years would remember it as aiding Imogen Worth to combat an illness after her father, Adam asked them for their help and then ultimately dying of it even when they tried to fight it to the end, James remembers that part of 1898 differently. It was during a series of Ripper-esque murders that Helen Magnus, a future version of her all dark haired and older, appeared in London and asked him for his help in tracking down a future version of Adam Worth. Caving to this request only when he figured out some of her secrets, he aided this version of Helen while avoiding spilling her secret to her past counterpart. While they ultimately came out on top, James was put in the position of keeping Helen's secret, something he did with gusto at the time and a smile, even suggesting she take a bit of a vacation while she waited to rejoin her future at the right moment.
After the capture of Spring-Heeled Jack, the Abnormal responsible for the series of Ripper like murders in 1898, in the course of those events, the future stays the same for both James and Helen. They're brought before the Prime Minister to hunt down Worth along with the other members of the Five in 1908, and working together with Druitt and the others track him down, only for Worth to jump off a cliff.
The Titanic and World War 1 happen and James in those years ends up with a device strapped to his chest, an invention made to prolong his life. Controlling his breathing and heart it stays on him for the rest of his life and come his sneaking into Nazy controlled France with Nigel and Helen would prove a liability. Tracking down the plans stolen from him eight months previous, the trio sets out looking for a weather machine, blowing up a security road block while meeting up with the local resistance after James's botched attempt at German. After scouting around the town they were searching for, they get ambushed and James shot while attempting to escape, saving their car from a grenade ready to explode. It's then that he meets Korba, the German Colonel responsible for the weather machine and the events that made him going to France.
However when he's brought in for interrogation, he's introduced to their associate, mutual friend John Druitt who, in James fashion, he isn't so happy to see, making snide remarks about national socialism and the like. This in turn leads to a long interrogation by Druitt of Watson, slapping him awake with a promise of the night just getting started, and upon further torture where he mentions the oncoming invasion he's told he's being sent to Berlin.
Abilities/Special Powers: At 95 James has a number of talents just brought on by age, including a number of languages of which Latin, French and German are the most obvious outside his native English. He's a doctor, having attended Oxford for medicine and coming out with a knowledge of not just human medicine but Abnormals as well thanks to his association with Helen. Like her he's versed in their care.
He's also a spymaster, as made note of by Druitt, and an inventor; having designed the weather machine plans that they use to control the fire elemental.
Of special note is his Source Blood given abilities of which are very vague. His gift was enhanced intelligence, his mind growing to new heights, and it allows him to piece together clues at a rate truly inspiring Sherlock Holmes, even going so far in later canon to figure out the layout of a city long since destroyed upon finding the proper markers. He can put together time and space and such all in his head near instantaneously if he has all the information available to him, a true deductive genius and investigator.
Also of note is the chest plate on him that controls his breathing and heart rate, without which he would die. Further tampering of it can kill him as well.
Third-Person Sample: The pieces are delicate, fine bits of metal he's not even sure he could replicate in this war time drought of the materials he needs, and it makes keeping his hand steady all the more important. Which is why he's focused on it, eyes fixed on the machine on the table and ignoring the crowd around him of people that have taken over the Sanctuary for a safe haven during the bombings. In fact the basement is a little to crowded for his tastes, the sirens too loud, but he needs something to do while things are happening and the invention he's working on, some random thing to make his spying easier, is all he can do down there.
Because bombs are falling and really, Helen had told him to sit down and not fret over things, he needed his rest and such and he'd rather not have it, not have to do it, but he had little choice. Which is why he's so focused on the task in front of him that he doesn't hear someone approaching until they touch his shoulder and he drops the metal before squeezing his fingers, a habit to preserve what little metal he has around and glares over at the intruder. It's harsher then he'd usually be, eyes dark and his mouth a firm line but they seem to grasp what he's saying without words and back off, not ready to risk his wrath.
"Good." He turns back to work at that, picking up the bit of metal with his tweezers and looking it over carefully with his jewelers glass stuck in his eye, looking for imperfections. When none present themselves he nods, goes back to work, trying his hardest to once again ignore the chaos around him to finish his work. If he can finish this then he can focus on something else and then another thing as the bombs pass. It's all he can do, and as frustrating as it is, something he's learning is just another part of his foreseeable future. Unfortunately.
First-Person Sample: [video]
You know, this isn't what I had in mind when I said I'd like somewhere other then London while being bombed, or France. [The sarcasm is rather evident in his voice as he rubs at his chin before pointing at the screen.] Though at least it's far more friendly then Berlin at about this time, not that you lot would know that I expect.
[He'll apologize later about his attitude really, right now he's still stinging a bit from everything he went through before arriving. So he's noticeably not smiling.]
As it stands, I'm James Watson, a doctor and for the moment that's all you need to know. If I can lend my skills to someone, I'm more then happy to do so, though for the present moment I'm afraid it's not possible. My leg is in need of tending and people here seem to frown on my moving about with it, but if it's something I can do while sitting, I'll happily do so.
